Food Preparation

Fridge & Freezer & Larder Clear Out
This was something I started about 10 days before starting my LRD (Liver reduction Diet).

Clear out I took a carrier bag and tossed all carbohydrates/ fats (fresh pastas, bread rolls, full fat cheeses, cream, biscuits, cakes, chocolate) into it, throwing anything else out that was past it’s sell by date. I gave all my unwanted food to a neighbour. He was very grateful.

Clean I cleaned out my fridge and freezer.

Repackaging, buying in, pre-cooked, small containers I took out all my chicken fillets in the freezer, cut them into large pieces and put into steam bags in the microwave. I then cut them into good chunks weighed them out so I knew what would constitute 100g in preparation for my LRD. I bought turkey mince, something I’d never bought before and split it up int 125g portions. I made some tasty meatballs with the mince too, bagged it all and put it in the freezer. I bought in white fish, haddock and sea bass for my freezer too. These options were going to to make up my main meals while on the LRD.

I went through all other meat and fish in the freezer and re-packaged it for the future, i.e. post-op. I have never really been a convenience food person and had stopped buying such many years ago. I had gotten very sick about 18 years ago and had discovered I had food intolerances, and had realised the additives in many prepared foods were making me ill. So in some respect maybe it’s been easier for me, I am not sure.

Vegetables I also bought in a variety of frozen vegetables since I felt that fresh would get wasted over the next month or two.

Fruit I already ate berries pretty much every day, so this was nothing new to me. I just had to make sure that I continued that. I never ate much apple or pear, so decided to buy pineapple, mango and melon slice snack sizes, and some nectarines. I did manage to buy some pears which I poached later on LRD.

Sweet treats I bought some sugar free jelly and light evaporated milk to make an alternative milk jelly to make later in LRD. I also bought some lighter than light Tea biscuits in case I was desperate for something to munch with my tea.

Soups I always have a variety of home made soups in plastic tubs in my freezer. I defrosted them all and repackaged into tiny containers that would be my new portion sizes during LRD and into the future. That is something I have been very thankful for.

Protein drinks, shakes and replacement meals. I had for about thirty years taken a shake or and fruit for breakfast. I never ate breakfast as a child. I could never eat solids or drink hot drinks first thing. I’ve never drank coffee. I do drink Green Tea or other non caffeine teas, but later in my day.

I did a little extra browsing and buying over the weeks prior to my op, trying as many drinks possible, studying their stats, and finding the ones I would rely on later as meals during liquid and puree stages and beyond. The ones I chose to stock up on are;

  1. Slimfast Vitality; Chocolate & Mint, Raspberry Crush, Chocolate and Strawberry & Blueberry Burst. I still have other flavours to try but at £14.99 a pop, I’ll do that over time. I especially love the choc & mint with hot water as a bed time drink. I just make up 125ml for that. I use a Bamix Blitzer to give my drinks a smooth frothy consistency.
  2. FUEL ; Chocolate, Banana and Strawberry. It comes in Vanilla too.
  3. Arla milk shakes; raspberry & strawberry and exotic fruit
  4. Arla & Skyr high protein yoghurts
  5. Actimel drinks
  6. For Goodness Shakes, in chocolate and strawberry

These are all high protein, something that was stressed to me that I was to ensure that I had sufficient protein at every meal during my LRD and when eating post-op into the future.
